Imphal, Sept. 23: YDC Yurembam got a battling 2-1 win over RYC Moidangpok in the 14th sub-junior state-level volleyball tournament at Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium today.
Yurembam sweated it out in the first set to edge Moidangpok 26-24. However, RYC Moidangpok fought back in the second with 25-19 point to level it 1-1. The deciding set saw YDC Yurembam cruise their way with a 15-8 win.
In the other matches of the day, IKYC Irengbam got the better of KYVA Khoijuman 2-0 with 25-23 and 25-22 points while SEWA Nachou beat PBM (B) Wangjing 2-0 with 25-23 and 25-17 points. PBM(A) Wangjing beat YSA Lilong in a hard fought match by 25-23, 22-25 and 15-6 points while SWYC Santipur beat IGO Oinam by 25-17, 25-17 points.
In the 23rd junior boys' category, PBM Wangjing defeated YVA(B) Ngairangbam 25-20 and 25-23, LFC Ngaikhong Khunou beat LSA Lilong 18-25, 25-19 and 15-14, YDC Yurembam beat KYVA Khoijuman 25-22 and 25-21, HYDCCL Heigrujam beat KGYC Khaidem 21-25, 25-17 and 15-12 and SUWC Irengbam beat YVA(A) Ngairangbam 25-20 and 25-19.
Inter-college chess: Y. Pritamkumar of LMS Law College emerged champions bagging 4.5 points in the Manipur University inter-college chess tournament at Dr Kamal Indoor Hall.
Other players who ranked among the top eight are Y. Lenin of D.M. College of Science with four points, W. Bigyanando of N B College with four points, Ng. Bhairad of D.M. College of Commerce with 3.5 points. E. Anand of D.M. College of Science, H. Muba of Liberal College, H. Poireiton of Liberal College and L. Peter of Manipur University bagging three points each. The top six players will represent Manipur University in the East Zone Inter-university Chess Tournament to be held at T.M. Bhagalpur University in December.
As for the team position, Liberal College took the first position while LMS Law College bagged the second spot.
Under-19 cricket: Mrinmoy Dutta will lead the Assam under-19 cricket team in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy limited-over tournament in Calcutta from October 3. The other members of the team are Abhisekh Thakuri (wk), Riyan Parag, Saahil Jain, Erik Roy, Danish Ahmed, Subham Mandal, Yasir Ali, Avinav Choudhury, Muktar Hussain, Jitumoni Kalita, Raj Agarwal, Rahul Singh, Bikash Singh and Mujibur Ali. Kanu Das and Subhrajit Saikia will be the manager and coach respectively while Dipankar Banerjee has been named assistant coach.
Body building: The 43rd Assam State Inter-district Body Building Championship will be held at Haflong in Dima Hasao district on October 9 and 10. Apart from junior, senior and masters events, there will be contest for physically challenged, men's athletic physique and Miss Assam.
Memo submitted: The ad hoc committee of the All Assam Chess Association, led by secretary Biswajit Bharadwaj, on Tuesday met Union sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal and submitted a memorandum requesting his assistance in development of chess in Assam.
Karate meet: The All Style Karate-Do Association, Assam's 28th Assam State Karate-Do Championship will be held at Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here from November 1 to 3. About 500 karatekas from across the state will participate in the meet.
