Over 2.11 lakh people in 16 Assam districts are reeling under floods while a person died in Baksa district in the past 24 hours. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority, in its flood report on Friday, said a total of 580 villages have been affected by the latest wave and the floodwaters have inundated more than 11,421 hectares of arable area.

The Brahmaputra is flowing above danger level at Nimatighat in Jorhat and Dhubri.

Authorities have opened three relief camps at Tinsukia and one at Sonitpur, where 273 people are taking shelter.

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi held a high level meeting in Guwahati on Friday and directed chief secretary V.K. Pipersenia to provide adequate food items, medicines and drinking water for the flood-affected people. Gogoi directed the state machinery to keep additional boats ready in case of any emergency.

In Guwahati, heavy early morning showers left areas like Lachit Nagar, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar and Zoo Road waterlogged for a few hours. Text by a staff reporter, picture by UB Photos
