Two top ZUF leaders in Meghalaya cop custody

Two top leaders of Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), a militant outfit based in Nagaland and Manipur, were arrested by police in West Jaiñtia Hills district of Meghalaya in the wee hours on Monday.

Shillong: Two top leaders of Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), a militant outfit based in Nagaland and Manipur, were arrested by police in West Jaiñtia Hills district of Meghalaya in the wee hours on Monday.

The two have been identified as ZUF chairman Raitu Chawang alias Raitu, 66, and information secretary Gengchung Pou Namthuiyang alias Dangmei, 43.

Sources said a special team of West Jaiñtia Hills district police, acting on information that two ZUF cadres were travelling from Silchar to Guwahati via Jaiñtia hills, put up a naka (blockade) at Phramer and apprehended the cadres during the checking of a night superbus (AS01-JC-1300) at 2am.

Four mobile phones were seized from the duo.

West Jaiñtia Hills superintendent of police Vivek Syiem said the two have confessed to being ZUF cadres and that they were on way to Guwahati. The objective of their visit is being enquired into.

The arrested duo were produced in a court of first class judicial magistrate and remanded in 24-hour judicial custody.

Syiem said the two are wanted in Tamenglong district of Manipur in five cases under the Arms Act and the superintendent of police of the district is sending a team to take custody of the two ZUF leaders.

The team is expected to arrive on Tuesday.
