Tinsukia, May 16: Two policemen - an assistant sub-inspector at Tinsukia police station and a lady constable in Guwahati - allegedly committed suicide in separate incidents.
Police recovered the bullet-riddled body of Karna Longpotia, 50, at his official quarter, barely a few metres from the police station, last night around 11.55pm.
The body of Manju Kalita, a constable in the Kahilpara-based 10th Assam Police Battalion, was recovered last night hanging from the ceiling of a barracks in the battalion complex.
"Longpotia's bloodied body was found with a bullet lodged in his chest and a bullet case nearby. A 9mm service pistol was found near his body," the police said.
According to sources, there was an altercation between Longpotia and his wife Renuka, 46. However, police are yet to confirm the same.
Tinsukia superintendent of police Mugdha Jyoti Mahanta, however, did not rule out the possibility of murder. "It cannot be termed a suicide at this stage. Doubts regarding the incident can be cleared once investigation is over."
Speaking to The Telegraph, deputy commissioner Ranjan Kumar Chakrabarty said a magisterial inquiry has been ordered.
Longpotia was posted in Tinsukia district in 2015. Earlier, he was stationed at Gellaphukri police outpost and posted to Tinsukia Sadar police station almost six months ago. He is survived by his wife and a 21-year-old daughter.
In Guwahati, Bhagadattpur police said according to their preliminary investigation, they found that the constable was struggling with monetary problems.
"We are still looking into the cause of death. But from our investigation it seems it is a case of suicide. Her colleagues said she had monetary problems for quite some time," the police said.
