Guwahati, June 7: Guwahati and Hailakandi today posted contrasting victories in their respective matches of the ongoing Assam Cricket Association-hosted first inter-district women’s cricket tournament at Nehru Stadium.

While the Guwahati girls registered a marginal eight-run win over Silchar in the first match of the day, Hailakandi eves defeated their Nagaon counterparts by seven wickets in the second match.

Batting first, Guwahati rode a strokeful 38 by all-rounder Suchitra Singh to score 82 for nine in the stipulated 16 overs, chasing which, the Silchar girls were restricted to 74 for six. The match was reduced to 16-overs-an-innings owing to moisture on the outfield.

Singh’s knock off 28 balls was laced with six hits to the fence. The experienced Singh exploited the moisture on the wicket as well as the slippery condition of the outfield to slam the visiting bowlers across the greens. However, the other Guwahati players failed to add to her impressive score. For Silchar, skipper Nilofer Yasmin Barbhuyan and Urmila Chatterjee took two wickets each.

Later, Barbhuyan remained unbeaten on 27 while Sona Singh and Rupashree Sharma chipped in with useful knocks of 10 runs each.

For Guwahati, Singh took three wickets by conceding 24 runs and Ankita Roy claimed two for 11.

In the second match of the day, the Nagaon girls were restricted to a modest total of 88 for seven in 20 overs. Their Hailakandi counterparts completed the run chase in 17.5 overs by losing only three wickets. For Nagaon, Tauhida Sultana topscored with a steady 31 while Rumi Kalita scored 17 runs. Nita Kamrung of Hailakandi took three wickets for 17 runs while skipper Tina Sinha notched two for 14.

Kamrung later remained unbeaten by topscoring for Hailakandi with a steady 26. Mohua Sarkar and Sulekha Sinha also contributed 10 runs each to the Hailakandi scoreboard.

Tomorrow, Hailakandi play Gauhati University while Lakhimpur girls clash with their Silchar counterparts.
