Guwahati, Nov. 24: Subham Mandal’s brilliant 98 helped Modern English School thrash Faculty HS School by 120 runs in a league match of the Sitaram Agarwala Memorial Invitational Under-16 Inter-school Cricket Meet at Judges Field here today.
Opting to bat, Modern posted a challenging total of 246 losing seven wickets in 35 overs. Playing the dual role of aggressor and sheetanchor, Subham hit as many as 13 boundaries to fall two short of what would have been a deserving ton. Bishal Sinha provided ample support and chipped in with 42 with five hits to the fence.
The Faculty bowlers erred in line and conceded as many as 34 wides with extras tallying 50. Rishav Goenka and Chiranjib Bora took one scalp each.
Faced with a daunting task, the Faculty batsmen succumbed to pressure of maintaining a high run rate from the start itself. Kankan Nath was the main contributor with 32 runs (4x4) while Arpan Uzir scored 28 with three hits to the fence. At the end of the day, it was too little too late, as Faculty lost wickets in quick succession and could manage only 126 for nine in 35 overs.
The Modern bowlers, too, were erratic as they conceded 32 extras, of which 30 were from wide deliveries.
However, Jitendra Deuri and Debasish Saikia maintained an ideal line and conceded just 13 and 15 runs respectively. Jitendra scalped two while Debasish bagged one wicket.
Subham’s resolute yet attractive innings earned him the Man of the Match award.
With this comprehensive win, Modern not only earned their regulation four points but also bagged a bonus point to boost their chances of advancing to the last four.
Tomorrow, Sarla Birla Gyan Jyoti will lock horns with Don Bosco School.
The inter-school meet is being organised by Bud Cricket Club.
