Guwahati, May 13: After its setback in the Uttar Pradesh election, the Congress is relying on its youth wing to mobilise support for the party in the forthcoming panchayat elections in Assam.

The Assam Pradesh Youth Congress has asked its members to don the mantle of aam admi ka sipahi (the common man’s army) to ensure that the benefits of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act Scheme — the UPA’s flagship programme — reaches the poor. The scheme is being implemented in 12 districts of the state.

The Youth Congress also launched its month-long awareness drive on the scheme from a massive rally in Morigaon district yesterday. “We will hold similar awareness rallies in all the 12 districts. We will not only ensure their enrolment but also see to it that no politician or official misutilises the funds. We will also highlight what our government has done and is doing for the aam admi,” Youth Congress president Rekibuddin Ahmed said here today.

Manik Tagore, the Indian Youth Congress general secretary in-charge of Assam, said, “A three-member Youth Congress team will now go to each and every home in every panchayat block as aam addmi ka sipahi to try and enrol as many eligible beneficiaries as possible to derive the maximum benefits. The teams will work in close co-ordination with the panchayats. They will also see to it that the scheme is executed in letter and spirit and job cards are issued promptly”.

Soon after the rally, the Youth Congress executive committee sat for its monthly meeting in Morigaon to take stock of the prevailing situation. “Through this executive meeting we wanted to send the message that we will hold our meetings in all districts and not keep ourselves to Guwahati,” Ahmed added.

One of the resolutions adopted at the meeting was forming a committee within the next seven days to study the delimitation issue and prepare a report within the next 10 days.

Indian Youth Congress secretary in-charge, N. Karpar, also attended the meeting along with minister Gautam Bora and parliamentary secretary Bibekananda Doley.

The meeting saw the resignation of four of its office-bearers after the AICC general secretary in-charge of Assam, Digvijay Singh, called for the resignation of all Youth Congress officials above 35 years and asked them to join Assam PCC. The Youth Congress reposed faith in Bhubaneswar Kalita and Tarun Gogoi and thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for seeking another Rajya Sabha term from Assam.
