Guwahati, March 26: Noted singer Mitali Choudhury, who once mesmerised people with her stage performances, passed away at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai at 12.45am on Saturday. She was 50.
Choudhury, who was suffering from cancer, left behind her husband, former AGP legislator Dilip Saikia Sonowal, and a daughter.
Choudhury was born in Panbazar in Guwahati and since her very childhood was devoted to music. She sang her first song with singer Khagen Mahanta at the age of 11.
The singer lent her voice to 15 Assamese films, including Joubone Amoni Kore, Tumi Mor Mathu Mor and Meghmukti. Besides Assamese songs, Choudhury could sing Hindi songs to perfection.
She spent most of her time in Mumbai since 1978 and sang for several Hindi television serials and films.
She sang for popular Hindi serials like Ramayana, Akbar The Great and Sri Krishna.
Recently, she sang for Hindi films Piya Piya and Durga. Before being detected with cancer, Choudhury had been working with music directors Nadeem-Shravan.
Music director Bhupen Uzir said Mitali Choudhury’s “gayiki” was next only to Parveen Sultana’s.
The singer’s body will be brought to Guwahati tomorrow for cremation.
