A month after a sub-inspector of Tripura police, Durga Kumar Hrangkhawl, was killed after contraband smugglers allegedly drove a van over him during a vehicle check near Kalamchoura village of Sonamura subdivision in Sepahijala district, chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb met the family of the police officer and handed over a check of Rs 10 lakh on Friday.

A press release from the information and cultural affairs department (ICA), which was made available to the media on Sunday, said Deb visited the family of the late sub-inspector of Tripura police.

“The chief minister met the family and handed over a cheque for Rs 10 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to the wife of the late sub-inspector, Panchalaxmi Hrangkhawl. He was killed on duty. The culprits will get strict punishment. The state government is with the family of martyrs. In the coming days, the family will receive various facilities,” the press release said.

On November 22, the 55-year-old Hrangkhawl was killed after contraband smugglers allegedly drove a van over him during a vehicle check near Kalamchoura village of Sonamura subdivision, around 55km from here.

Hrangkhawl hailed from Hrangkhawl village of Teliamura sub-division of Khowai district. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.

Earlier, law minister Ratan Lal Nath had announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the slain hero.
