Guwahati, Sept. 24: Five suspected robbers were apprehended following an encounter with the police at Nine Mile bordering Meghalaya late tonight. One of them was injured.

A police source said that a team from Jorabat police station, acting on a tip-off, waylaid the black Maruti Alto car (bearing registration number AS-01 R/ 8585) at Nine Mile.

“On being challenged, the robbers opened fire. The police team launched retaliatory action, injuring one, who has been admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. He has been identified as Taizuddun Ali.

“Two other robbers managed to flee on a motorcycle,” the source said.

The four other arrested persons were identified as Faznur Ali, Imran Ali, Mohd Jainal Ali and Anil Baruah. They did not disclose the names of the ones who had managed to flee.

According to the source, the gang had come to Nine Mile from Baihata Chariali with the intention to commit burglaries in the area.
