Silchar, May 19: Massive erosion by the Chiri at Pollorbund village, nearly 15km east from here, has threatened to disrupt traffic on National Highway 53 that links this south Assam town with Imphal.
An official source here confirmed that at least seven houses along the highway at Pollorbund crashed into the river yesterday.
The trouble started after Chiri, a hilly stream, recently changed its course. It has now begun to flow perilously close to villages and the national highway.
However, the erosion has been slow, sources said.
They said officials of the Border Road Task Force under the Union highways and surface transport ministry visited the site of the erosion to assess the damage.
He said the Border Roads Organisation would draw up a comprehensive plan to tackle the erosion and save the highway, which is the lone road link between south Assam and Manipur.
