Ras Leela, the epitome of Manipuri classical dance that depicts the celestial and eternal love of Radha and Krishna, came alive on the mandap (stage) of the Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Akademi, Imphal, from April 7 to 11. As a special attraction, the organisers arranged an exhibition of Male Sankirtana (Nupa Pala), also known as Kartal Cholom or cymbal dance.
On April 7, the Arts and Cultural Academy of Thoubal performed the Nupa Pala. The Sangeet Academy Kakching, also of Thoubal, performed Vasanta Ras the same day. This Ras is generally performed on the first full moon night of spring (Vasanta Purnima). This dance has a religious milieu but despite its devotional nature it has emerged as an energetic and entertaining dance item.
On April 8, Sawombung Sangeet Samaj, Imphal East, performed the acrobatic style of Nupa Pala and the Government Dance College, Manipur, performed Diva Ras. The dance form enchanted the audience with its portrayal of the eternal love of the divine couple.
On April 9, Jagoi Marup, a dance group from Imphal West, performed Nitya Ras while Awang Potsangbam of the district performed Nupa Pala and Nata Sankirtana. Jagoi Marup, which has performed on the national and international level, attracted a huge audience.
On the fourth day, Public Theatre Nambol of Bishnupur performed Kunja Ras while Moirang performed Nupa Pala. Neither of the dance groups was able to demonstrate its skills fully.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Akademi performed Nupa Pala and Maha Ras on the last day of the festival. The group’s performance was a special bonanza for the audience.
However, the dance forms seem to be ensconced in the cocoon of traditional beliefs and aesthetic values of sect. Repeated attempts at solo performance have not met with success so far.
