At least 18 people lost their lives across three states in the rain-battered Northeast since Friday.
Nine of the deceased are from Arunachal Pradesh, five from Assam and four from Mizoram. Most of them died in rain-induced landslides with the Met office forecasting heavy rains till June 4.
Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu, while condoling the deaths on Saturday evening, urged the people to remain vigilant and maintain extreme caution, “not to travel, especially during the night, if not absolutely necessary” and to shift from vulnerable areas to safer locations.
At least nine persons, seven in East Kameng and two in Ziro valley, were killed in Arunachal Pradesh due to massive landslides triggered by incessant rainfall over the last two days across the frontier state. Almost all rivers, rivulets and streams in the state are in spate.
At least five persons have died in Assam since Friday, all in and around Guwahati.
Officials in Mizoram said intense rainfall since May 24 had impacted 10 of the state’s 11 districts, seven severely, resulting in over 60 incidents of landslides on Saturday and seven on Friday that led to house collapses and disruption in traffic.
An embankment was breached in Sribhumi district while a bridge at Chaygaon in Kamrup district was declared unsafe for vehicular traffic.
In Mizoram, three members of a family died in a house collapse caused by a flash flood in Champhai district while one died in a house collapse in Kolosib district.
Incessant rainfall has affected normal life in several districts of Manipur, especially in Imphal Valley.
