Jorabat: More than 1,000 protesters took out a rally from Samota to Sonapur revenue circle office under Dimoria block on Thursday against the Assam government decision to rehabilitate 200 evicted families of Amchang wildlife sanctuary in Tegheria near Sonapur under Kamrup (metro) district.

Supporters of Amri Karbi National Council, Amri Karbi Students' Union, Amri Karbi Arloso Asem, Amri Karbi Bangthe Asem, Amri Karbi Tsornam Ahartsi Amel and Amri Karbi Ruktsak Asem took part in rally.

Gauhati High Court on Friday allowed the government to temporarily suspend its eviction drive inside Amchang for two months but asked it to continue demolition of commercial establishments.

The six groups jointly submitted a memorandum to stop the proposed rehabilitation of the evicted families in East Aprikola in Tegheria.

Amri Karbi National Council general secretary Bhogen Teron said, "The proposed rehabilitation area falls under Dimoria tribal block where the Amri Karbi tribe lives."

"These people residing here are poor and backward and the rehabilitation of the outsiders will effect them economically as well as politically," he added.

The groups also urged the government to pay attention to their demand.
