Aizawl: The People's Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (Prism), a newly floated political party in Mizoram, has said it will appeal to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) against the Mizoram government for failing to take steps after an alleged assault on a civilian by chief minister Lal Thanhawla's security guards recently.
"We will write to the NHRC seeking necessary steps against the Mizoram government for refusing to take legal actions against the security guards who had assaulted a truck driver on the night of January 22," Prism president Vanlalruata said.
He said home minister R. Lalzirliana, government officials and security guards had admitted that the incident took place on January 22.
"Despite admitting that the attack on truck driver Lalbiakzuala - who was assaulted while travelling on an uphill and narrow highway along the Kolasib-Aizawl road - violated human rights, the government refused to take any action," Vanlalruata said.
"We had earlier appealed to the state government to take legal action, but it has remained silent," he said, adding that they would submit a written appeal to the NHRC within this week.
The anti-corruption watchdog-turned-political party had written to President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, imploring them to initiate a probe into the case and take appropriate action against Lal Thanhawla and the assailants.
Lalbiakzuala, a resident of Sihphir village near Aizawl, was seriously injured in the attack. He <$>was taken to Synod Hospital, Durtlang, here and was discharged on January 29.
"Although Lalbiakzuala's father had filed an FIR at Bawngkawn police station, it was later withdrawn and the investigation process stopped after police officers paid Rs 50,000 to the victim's family as medical reimbursement on January 29," Vanlalruata said.
He said they had not received any response from either Kovind or the PMO till date.
