Shillong, Jan. 11: Meghalaya police are investigating a case registered by CMCL Star Cements, Lumshnong, under Khliehriat sub-division in the Jaintia Hills following its director receiving a threat through a text message.

According to a complaint filed by an official of the company, M.K. Rai, at Khliehriat police station, Devender Bansal, director of M/s CMCL Star Cements, was threatened via a text message on January 7 around 10.10pm.

Meghalaya police website reported that the text message, which was sent to Bansal, read, “We are the people of Hynniewtrep so don’t need like you to stay in our land. You destroyed us please stop your ideology if not we will shoot you in front of your office.”

When contacted, a police official said till date no one had been arrested but investigations were on to apprehend those behind the text message.

This is not the first time that Bansal has been threatened.

In August last year, the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), in an “open letter”, asked Bansal to “rectify his behaviour” of not conforming tothe sentiments of the local populace.

In the “open letter in public interest” addressed to Bansal, the HNLC said, “You are hereby directed to kindly rectify your behaviour by not confronting the sentiments of the local populace.”

The letter was signed by the publicity secretary of the outfit, Sainkupar Nongtraw.

The HNLC said if the company failed to take the matter seriously it would lead to a kind of confrontation, which could affect the long term interest of Star Cement factory.
