Guwahati, Dec. 7: Assam Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass will meet the British Museum authorities and ask them to allow Vrindavani vastra to be displayed in Assam.

Dass will leave for London on December 12.

The Vrindavani vastra (the cloth of Vrindavan) was produced in the state sometime in the 17th century. It is made of woven silk and figured with scenes from the life of Lord Krishna during his time in Vrindavan.

At over nine metres long, this Assamese textile is the largest of its type to survive. It is made up of 12 strips, all sewn together. The Krishna scenes on the textile are from the 10th century Bhagavata Purana and are elaborated in the plays of Xankardeb.

"Dass will convey to the British Museum the wish of the state government to bring the Vrindavani vastra to Assam for a few days. The government plans to generate funds through tickets for visitors during the display of the vastra, which will be used to create a replica of the cloth," a source said.

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has also expressed his keenness to bring the vastra to the state, the source said.

The state government is also in consultation with Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha, the organisation devoted to propagating the teachings of Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Xankardeb, in this regard.
