Guwahati: Assam Engineering College, Guwahati, will form four committees to look into issues relating to administration, academics, discipline and social responsibility of the institution.

The decision was taken in a meeting on Saturday. Alumni, guardians, faculty members, staff, students and principal secretary of the higher education department Ajay Tiwari attended the meeting.

The committees will include members from the faculty, students and alumni. It will be coordinated by a faculty member.

A series of "untoward" incidents recently adversely affected the image of the oldest engineering college of Assam.

The trigger for the move was attributed to the February 21 incident in which nine students of the college were arrested on charges of vandalising a marriage venue near the campus at Jalukbari at night.

A statement issued by the college said a brainstorming session held during the meeting included involvement of all stakeholders for identification of scope for improvement of the college and its peripheral areas. The alumni stressed the need to conduct pilot projects to benefit society and develop a mechanism to receive inputs from stakeholders. The issues of proper demarcation of the college boundary, eviction of encroachers, enhancement of soft skills of students and development of social outreach schemes were also discussed. A website of the alumni association was also launched at the meeting.
