Elephant found dead in Sonitpur

A wild tusker was found dead at a paddy field at Bokagaon near Balipara in Sonitpur district on Sunday. The tusker, 7.5 ft tall, was bleeding when its carcass was found.

Migration by 150 wild elephants from the nearby Balipara and Chariduar reserve forests has caused damage to standing crop on several thousand hectares during the current season. The Sonitpur district administration has banned demecron, an organophosphate allegedly being used by irate villagers to kill wild elephants.

Youths killed

The bodies of two youths were recovered on the Bordumsa-Pengeri Road in Tinsukia district on Sunday morning. The bodies have been identified as those of Firoz Chetia and Prashanta Gohain. The youths were from Mihali Ritu village. Police suspect they were killed by militants.

Assam feat

Assam will host the children’s science congress next year, becoming the only state in the country to do it twice. The state last hosted the congress in 1995. Assam Science Technology and Environment Council officials said the focal theme for the 12th national children’s science congress would be Water. The theme would have sub-themes like water harvesting.

OIL dividend

Oil India Ltd (OIL) has paid a final dividend of Rs 189 crore to the Centre for 2002-03. A cheque for the amount was handed over to Union minister of petroleum and natural gas Ram Naik by OIL chairman-cum-managing director R.K. Dutta.

Mizo JD-U

President of the Mizoram unit of the Janata Dal (United) Lalawmpuia Khiangte said the party would contest the Assembly poll in 25 constituencies. The JD-U chief said the party would put up candidates who have never been involved in corruption, are faithful to the party and ready to sacrifice themselves for the people.

Buddhist meet

Buddhist monks from around the world will meet in Dibrugarh on November 8 for a religious conference. The conference is being organised by the International Brotherhood Mission at Jyoti Nagar in Dibrugarh.

IAF rally

An Indian Air Force recruitment rally for airmen (technical and non-technical trades) would be conducted next Thursday and Saturday at the Assam Rifles complex in Agartala.
