Senior Ulfa activist Ramu Mech was shifted back to Guwahati on Thursday following the completion of his treatment in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). In his mid-forties, Mech was suffering from partial damage of the retina in his left eye. The ailment, which was gradually spreading to his right eye, had surfaced about seven years ago. It had deteriorated due to lack of treatment. hough he was kept in the high-security Tihar jail, Mech was frequently brought to the centre for regular check-up and treatment, sources said. he last time he was brought to Delhi for treatment was on September 5 this year. The decision was taken after another jailed militant, Robin Handique, died in Assam following a prolonged ailment. Ulfa has been demanding the release of all its jailed activists lodged in various jails of Assam. The Election Commission has announced special summary revision of electoral rolls of all the 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam with reference to January 1, 2006 as the qualifying date.
