The All Assam Motor Transport Association (AAMTA) has called for a 48-hour transport strike with effect from 6 am of December 17, demanding 70 per cent hike in fare following rise in diesel prices. ll commercial vehicles, including autorickshaws and commercial trucks, will be off the roads during the bandh, said P. Das, secretary general of the association.

Assam loan

The Assam government on Monday floated 7.32 per cent Assam state development loan, 2014, for public subscription to finance productive development programmes and projects in the state. The loan will be sold through the Mumbai and Guwahati branches of the Reserve Bank of India. The value of each stock is Rs 100 and will be issued for a minimum amount of Rs 10,000.

Gogoi promise

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday said special measures would be taken to strengthen civil defence and homeguards force. Gogoi was speaking on the occasion of Civil Defence Day at civil defence and homeguards headquarters at Beltola in Guwahati.

New V-C

Agricultural scientist S.S. Baghel has been appointed the new vice-chancellor of Assam Agriculture University, Jorhat. This was stated in an Assam government press release.

Rebel identity

Police on Monday identified the slain Ulfa militant, killed in an encounter with the army on Sunday at Palashbari, as Subash Sarma. The rebel, was wanted by police in connection with several killings, including the murder of Assam minister Nagen Sarma, in the late nineties.

Dhubri protest

The Dhubri district unit of AGP took out a protest march in Dhubri town on Monday against the failure of the Congress government to fulfil the aspirations of the people.

Power strike

The Assam chapter of the National Co-ordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers on Monday appealed to all trade unions, student organisations and citizens to support its proposed statewide 24-hour power strike on December 9.
