Jorhat Engineering College organised a three-day techno-cum-cultural extravaganza, Phoenix ’08, on its campus from March 21, as a pre-dawn celebration of its golden jubilee in 2010.
Phoenix ’08 comprised a Northeast inter-college meet with numerous symposiums, competitions and awareness programmes. Students from all parts of the state participated in the technical competitions. An alumni meet was organised for the students.
The success of the meet was the result of co-ordination among the students of the college and the college authorities, headed by principal B.N. Choudhury.
A souvenir titled ASTARAAG was released to highlight the talents of the students, under the guidance of Parimal Bakul Baruah, the secretary of the alumni association. Students’ council president Muktikam Gogoi, general secretary Chandan Barman, joint secretaries Md Ashrif Ullah and Biplob Singh Bhuyan helped organise the meet. The main attraction of the event was a performance by singer Amit Sana.
Text workshop
The Centre for Sankaradeva Studies, an extension of the department of Assamese, Gauhati University, organised a two-day workshop in Text Critical Studies on March 29 and 30, as part of the diamond jubilee celebrations of the university and the department.Inaugurating the workshop at the Dr Herambakanta Barpuzari Bhawan, university vice-chancellor Amarjyoti Choudhury lauded the efforts of the centre in organising the workshop. He said only with the critical studies of the texts one could realise the true form and spirit of earlier literature.
Prof. Umesh Deka, dean, faculty of arts, Gauhati University, said the diamond jubilee of the university is also the diamond jubilee of the department of Assamese.
Trade seminar
A UGC-sponsored seminar on Entrepreneurship Development: A Key Issue for Socio-economic Growth was held recently at Gauhati Commerce College.The seminar brought together entrepreneurs from different fields, government representatives from departments concerned, members of institutions actively engaged in developing entrepreneurial skills and attitude, academicians, and members of financial institutions.
Principal Ghanashyam Nath welcomed the gathering.
Chief guest K.N. Hazarika, CMD of NEDFi, said the youth of the Northeast should view entrepreneurship as a profession.
There is a need for an integrated approach and NEDFi was willing to act as a facilitator. He urged the participants to come out with practical suggestions that could be incorporated in the policy decisions under the aegis of DoNER and the Union and state governments.
Sunil Kumar Saikia from the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship, Guwahati, made the keynote address.
