Guwahati, Aug. 9: A team of NIA officials today visited Ulfa (I) chairman Abhizeet Asom's ancestral house in Assam's Nagaon district to inquire about his whereabouts after non-bailable arrest warrants were issued against him and the outfit's commander-in-chief Paresh Barua.
An official source said a court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) here issued the warrants on July 28 in connection with the NIA case against the two in which they were chargesheeted as absconding accused.
The source said the NIA team went to Abhizeet's house at Kaxori gaon in the Puranigudam area under Samaguri police station in Nagaon and spoke to his family members.
According to the NIA, Abhizeet's actual name is Mukul Hazarika and he is a UK-based physician who was associated with a human rights group, Assam Watch.
He studied at Radha Kanta Baruah Higher Secondary School in Puranigudam from 1955 to 1962 where his father, late Kameswar Hazarika, was the headmaster. "He completed his MBBS from Gauhati Medical College in 1970 and left for the UK around 30 years ago. According to his relatives, the last time he came to Assam was for a few days in 1983 when his father expired. After that, they have not met him," the source said.
"Today's visit was part of the inquiry by the NIA as the agency would have to file a compliance report in the court on the execution of the warrants issued against the two top Ulfa (I) leaders by August 21," the source said.
The NIA claims Barua is in Myanmar while Hazarika is in the UK.
"In the next phase, the NIA will move court to declare them as proclaimed offenders and then it will request the Interpol to issue red-corner notices against them," the source said.
"After the red-corner notice is issued, the NIA will initiate the process for Hazarika's extradition from the UK," he added.
The NIA, in the chargesheet, has also mentioned the confessional statement of an arrested self-styled second lieutenant of Ulfa (I), Gagan Hazarika alias Joydeep Cheleng.
The source said Gagan had confessed to serving as Hazarika's bodyguard during his visit to the Ulfa (I) camp in Myanmar after he became the outfit's chairman in 2012.
"As Gagan was the personal bodyguard of Hazarika, he was closely associated with him during his stay at the outfit's Myanmar camps. His revelation that Hazarika is Abhizeet Asom will be useful evidence for the NIA to establish the real identity of the Ulfa (I) chairman and push for his extradition," the source said.
The NIA has also collected photographs of Hazarika visiting Ulfa (I) camps in Myanmar and meeting senior leaders of other militant groups.
