Nov. 20: The North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Limited (Neramac) is going on an expansion spree in the city, enthused by good response.
The corporation is opening four more retail outlets, of which one is slated to open this month. It already has two outlets.
The first two outlets will start functioning on the campus of the directorate of horticulture and food processing at Khanapara and the Beltola market.
Two more outlets will be opened at the new Assam State Agriculture Marketing Board market in Panjabari and at Ulubari.
“The construction of the first stall at Khanapara is almost complete and the next one will start soon,” a senior official of Neramac told The Telegraph.
The corporation already has an outlet at the airport which is doing well and gives good exposure.
“The airport outlet has given us a lot of publicity as it has helped people from outside know about our products,” the official said.
The official said the outlets had good location and would attract a lot of people.
The outlet at the state zoo is a Neramac franchise.
A central government undertaking under the DoNER ministry, Neramac has a plan to expand its operations through retail marketing for few of the naturally-grown organic crops along with processed products, phul jharu and others which will directly support the tiny and small producers.
“There is good demand for organic products and many in the current generation are looking towards it,” the official said.
He said its products were also being bought by others and sold at various outlets.
“We help local food processing units by marketing their products in identified domestic markets through its own retail outlets. Some of these products are also exported,” the official said.
“Being a regional company, we are striving our best to maintain our performance. The bigger companies with huge money power are always a big threat but we are doing our best to keep the competition,” the official said.
The sales turnover of the corporation has increased from Rs 36.91 crore in 2008-09 to Rs 101.65 crore now.
The corporation has also organised several capacity building programmes for the local youths on important cash crops like ginger, pineapple, passion fruit and oranges grown naturally organic in the region.
