Shillong, Sept. 11: The North Eastern Hill University (Nehu) will initiate interactive sessions among its students for better harmony and co-existence.

Nehu vice-chancellor Pramode Tandon told reporters here that the university had decided on this course in the wake of the recent assault on three BTech students by some law students.

Saying that interaction among students of different departments was the need of the hour, he said the university would also encourage postgraduate students to interact with juniors in both the BTech and law courses.

Tandon also said action would be initiated against the errant students once the probe into the incident of assault was completed.

Controller of examinations David Syeimlieh suggested frequent interactions of parents with students and faculty members as well as counselling of students to avoid such incidents from recurring.

Tandon said there were bound to be teething problems for freshers and it would take some time for them to adjust to the new environment.

There has been a 20 per cent increase in admissions to the university and the freshers may not be able to cope up with the university norms initially, he added.

The vice-chancellor said a group of newly appointed proctors would take care of the needs of the students coming from outside the state.

Terming the incident of assault as a minor case, he said no colour should be lent to it because the affected students happened to be from Assam.

He said the Nehu authorities would ensure that similar incidents do not occur on the campus in future. “Nehu condemns the assault on students and we are committed to finding out the reason and the students behind it.”

Tandon said the inquiry team, led by the dean of students welfare, R.N. Saran, would complete the probe shortly and action would be initiated against the errant students thereafter.
