Imphal, Sept. 20: With the Centre “assuring” 100 per cent funding for the NCC, the Shillong-based directorate is all set to inject more blood into its activities in the Northeast, including Manipur.
The NE directorate’s deputy director general Brig. S.S. Chhikara told mediapersons here today that defence minister Pranab Mukherjee has promised 100 per cent funding for the Northeast NCC. Earlier, the state government had to contribute 10 per cent of the expenditure.
He said under the UPA government’s new policy, the Centre would bear the entire expenditure of the NCC in the Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir. The other states would continue to contribute to the expenses.
NCC activities were suspended in Manipur after the Apunba Lup imposed a ban on it as part of its agitation against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act two years ago. The agitation was triggered by the custodial killing of Thangjam Manorama by Assam Rifles troops. The ban is yet to be lifted.
