Guwahati, May 28: The mother of Assam Ranji Trophy off-spinner Pankaj Tamuly, who has left to play for an English county club without informing the Assam Cricket Association (ACA), has apologised to the cricket body for her “son’s oversight”.
In a letter to the ACA through the Tinsukia District Sports Association secretary Brajen Gohain, Pankaj’s mother admitted that her son had committed a mistake and she apologised on his behalf. Pankaj would apologise soon after his return, Gohain said over phone from Tinsukia.
The ACA had issued a showcause notice to Tamuly for violation of the code of conduct by a senior player.
The Tinsukia tweaker left for England recently along with teammate Sourav Bhagawati of Dibrugarh to play for Somerset-based Brentknoll Cricket Club. Bhagawati, who had played for an English club two years ago, had informed the ACA through the Dibrugarh District Sports Association about his trip, but Pankaj had not informed the authorities.
His England tour came to light after the ACA had asked its Tinsukia unit to inform him about Wednesday’s meeting with Ranji players regarding the new format.
Though the ACA has embarked on a strict discipline maintenance mission, Pankaj should be let off with a warning considering this is his first mistake, Gohain said. “We would urge the ACA to take a soft stand against him.”
Tamuly and Bhagawati have made their Ranji debut last season. Pankaj’s brother Pranjal is also a promising batsman.
The brothers were instrumental in Tinsukia’s explosive run into the Nuruddin Trophy senior inter-district final last year.
Sources said Pankaj, whose father died some time back, left for England to augment the family income.
