Dhemaji: Rohan Patir, a self-styled commander of Liberal Democratic Council of Misingland (LDCM), the outfit allegedly involved in the killing of local Congress leader Hiranya Doley, was arrested from Guwahati on Thursday morning.
Doley was killed at his residence in Dekapam (Jonai) near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on June 24.
Dhemaji superintendent of police Nilesh Sawakare said cases on charges of murder and extortion were registered against Patir at Simen Chapori and Gogamukh police stations. "With the arrest of Patir, we have apprehended 10 suspected members of the outfit. More members will be arrested soon as nearly 35 cadres were there in the group under Patir's leadership. The outfit was active in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Majuli and Jorhat districts of Upper and central Assam," he added.
Three linkmen of the outfit - Ranjana Pait-Doley (Jonai), Robin Kumbang and Bipul Doley of Dekapam under Jonai sub-division of the district were arrested on June 25. Three armed cadres - Amitab Patir, 28, Satya Kumbang, 34, and Kangkan Morang, 30 - were apprehended in July.
The outfit allegedly served extortion notices to three officers, including a junior engineer of the Mising Autonomous Council in Gogamukh. The police said the outfit was formed in October 2009. Patir was arrested in Tezpur in 2012 but was released because of lack of evidence.
The president of Takam Mising Porin Kebang, a student union, Naresh Kumbang, said, "Peace-loving Mising people will never tolerate pro-insurgent activities. The community should not give shelter to the militants."
