Guwahati, Nov. 10: The All-Assam Body-Building Association is organising the Mr Assam Body-Building Championship, along with an All India Invitation Body-Building Championship, at Sivasagar from December 5-7, to mark its silver jubilee year.

Former Mr India and the association’s secretary, Bijit Gogoi, today said: “This year being our silver jubilee year, we will host two mega events — the Mr Assam championship and the All-India Invitational championship. We have invited 20 top national ranked body-builders for the All-India Invitational championship while national players from the state and Mr Assam title holders will only be able to qualify for it. Around 300 players will be participating in the Mr Assam championship.”

“We have forwarded a letter to the other association as we want to provide everyone with a platform to showcase their talent. We want to unite because the multiple associations are hampering the players in a big way,” Gogoi added.

The championships carry prize-money of Rs 5 lakh each, along with trophies and a motorcycle for the champion of champions. The events will be held at Piyali Phukan Stadium and Sivasagar Boarding Field.

Debabrata Saikia, the principal secretary, department of sports and youth welfare, government of Assam, is the organising committee president with chief minister Tarun Gogoi as its chief patron. The event will feature a number of cultural events, along with an anti-drug campaign.

The organisers revealed their plans of inviting an international bodybuilder of Mr Olympia status. The president and secretary also spoke on the lines of not continuing with their designation after their tenure is over.

“Being the secretary I wanted to provide the players with whatever we missed during our playing days, I have done that and have no intentions of continuing with it. I will be as an adviser but not as the secretary,” Gogoi said.
