
Guwahati: Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone of a park to be set up in memory of the Assam Agitation martyrs and inaugurated an office of the Assam Accord implementation department here on Swahid Diwas on Sunday.
Swahid Diwas (Martyrs' Day) is observed on December 10 as a tribute to the sacrifices of the 855 martyrs of the of six-year-old Assam Agitation coinciding with the death anniversary of its first martyr, Khargeswar Talukdar.
Laying the foundation stone of the proposed park at Sarusajai sports complex, Sonowal said the park, including a memorial, it would be set up on a 98- bigha land at Paschim Boragaon here.
He said the park and the memorial would reflect the contribution of the martyrs and remind posterity of the sacrifices made by them to free the state from illegal immigrants.
"Sufficient funds have been earmarked for this project," said finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Sonowal inaugurated the office of the Assam Accord implantation department at the Officers Training Institute in Khanapara.
"The new office has been set up to facilitate people's participation in implementation of the Accord ," he said.
The office also houses a photo gallery reflecting the significant moments of the Assam Movement and signing of the Assam Accord.
He said the state government would publish a book chronicling the Assam Agitation.
Sonowal said publication of an error-free NRC and sealing of the India-Bangladesh border would pave the way for an Assam free of illegal migrants.
The Centre and the state government have set a December 31 deadline to complete sealing the state's border with Bangladesh, he added.
The All Assam Students Union observed Swahid Diwas at Namrup in Dibrugarh district while the AGP observed Swahid Diwas at Barkhetri in Nalbari district and the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha at Bhabanipur in Barpeta district.
