Imphal: The Manipur government is keeping a strict vigil on the flood situation in the state, although the situation improved in some areas on Tuesday.

Till Tuesday evening it had evacuated 51,689 flood victims, opened 174 relief camps, where 59,170 people are taking shelter, as well as 24 medical camps and distributed relief materials to flood victims. Central and state forces have been deployed to assist flood victims.

The floods have inundated 304 villages, 3,947 hectares of agricultural land and damaged 23,456 houses. Seven people have died while one is missing. A total of 1,80,102 people have been affected in several parts of the valley and the hill districts - Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Kakching, Kamjong, Jiribam, Churachandpur, Pherzawl and Kangpokpi.

In Imphal East, nine of the 10 Assembly constituencies have been severely affected and the administration has opened 62 flood relief camps, sheltering 51,000 people. Nearly 20,000 people were evacuated. The floodwaters have damaged 1,500 houses, 3,500 acres of cropland and inter-village roads. The administration, in close co-ordination with the district units of the state health department, has also set up medical/health camps in Heingang, Thongju, Kshetrigao, Keirao and Andro autonomous councils.

In Imphal West, Wangoi and Mayang Imphal Assembly constituencies have been affected. More than 1,500 quintals of rice were distributed. Of the 52 relief camps opened, about 20 are still functional. The flood situation in some parts of the district has improved, including Patsoi and some areas in Takyel Khongban, Lamphel and Tarung.

The swirling rivers have weakened and damaged many bridges in the state. A wooden suspension bridge was washed away by the Imphal river and a suspension bridge was washed away by the Tuilang in Kangpokpi district. Besides, several roads built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana were also damaged.

Flood donation: Two groups donated Rs 1.62 lakh to the chief minister's relief fund on Tuesday for flood victims. The College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University, Iroisemba, gave Rs 1,42,250 while the Institute of Driver Training and Research Centre, Manipur, gave Rs 20,000.
