Kamrup shines in wushu

Guwahati, May 3: The two-day second sub-junior and junior and the ninth senior all-Assam wushu championship concluded here last night.

Vikram Aditya Chowdhury and Dhanjeet Deka of Kamrup and Rajesh Limboo of Golaghat bagged gold in sub-junior boys? gunshu (stick), taijiquan (bare hand) and qiangshu (spear) events respectively.

Jyoti Limboo of Golaghat won the gold in the sub-junior girls? qiangshu event.

Kamrup dominated the juniors winning all four gold medals.

While Raju Surgyari claimed the boys? nanquan (bare hand) gold, Jechonia Islary bagged the gold in boys? taijiquan. Reema Das and Alpana Boro clinched gold in the girls? taijiquan and nangun (cudgel stick).

Ganesh Seal and Bikram Boro of Kamrup won gold in men?s gunshu and taijiquan. Boro bagged the gold in taijijian, too, defeating Plaban Borah of Sivasagar. Boro defeated teammate Tankeswar Baishya. Palaban Borah bagged the bronze in taijiquan.

The state teams for various nationals will be selected on the basis of their performance at this meet. A junior team of 27 members, selected from the meet, will head for Jalandhar on May 9 to participate in the fifth junior nationals from May 12 to 16. Sport adviser to the chief minister Robin Bordoloi gave away the prizes at the concluding function held here.

Wushu has been included in the 33rd National Games to be held here later this year. The state team for the mega event will be selected on the basis of the performance in this championship.

Judo tourney

Dibrugarh will host the Seven Sisters? (Northeast) Judo Championships from July 22 to 24 under the aegis of All Assam Judo Association and Dibrugarh District Judo Association, reports our Dibrugarh correspondent.

Judokas from the seven states of the region will take part in the meet, which has been billed as an exercise to prepare the Assam team for the Games, said Sanjib Bordoloi, secretary of the Dibrugarh District Judo Association.

?We will form a reception committee to conduct the meet. We have already approached Oil India Limited, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited and Indian Oil Corporation for financial support,? Bordoloi added.

The first preparatory camp for the Games will also be held in Dibrugarh.

The association is trying to rope in a Chinese coach for the camp, said Bordoloi, who is also the working president of the state association.
