A herd of wild elephants destroyed seven houses at Jaithera village, 10km from here on Friday morning.

The herd also destroyed three houses in Sengaribasti, two houses and one grocery shop at Theplaguri.

“It was around 3.30 in the morning, it was raining heavily, suddenly the elephants attacked, they destroyed my house, ate rice and demolished my grocery shop,” said Johny Kemprai at Theplaguri.

“We want the government to provide us aid immediately, our house and ration are damaged and now in this period of lockdown, when everything is on a standstill, how will we get food and repair materials?” asked Naresh Das, another villager.

“The teams of forest department are on alert in these villages, necessary measures are being taken,” Pulak Choudhary, district forest officer, said.
