Guwahati, Feb. 9: The All India Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has expelled AIUDF chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal on charges of using the organisation for political gains.

The group has also dissolved its Assam unit headed by Ajmal.

The development is a setback for Ajmal ahead of the Assembly elections as the Jamiat, an Islamic organisation, has considerable clout among the Muslim community here.

The head of the All India Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, Syed Arshad Madani, today told The Telegraph from New Delhi said he received several written and verbal complaints that Ajmal was making no difference between the AIUDF and the Jamiat, which is totally unfair.

He said the Jamiat did not have any problem with Ajmlal leading a political party but it could not tolerate the mixing of the two groups.

“The very basic character of the Jamiat will be diluted if the organisation is allowed to be used for political activities. The Jamiat was founded in 1919 and Maulana Mehmud Hasan, an Islamic scholar of that time, was the guiding force behind the initiative. Since the pre-Independence era the Jamiat has been spreading the Islamic ideals and fighting for social and educational rights of Muslims. But the reverse is happening with the Jamiat under Ajmal’s leadership in the state,” Madani said.

He said there was no effort to propagate and popularise the non-political ideals of the Jamiat in the state.

Madani said a 25-member of ad-hoc committee of the Assam unit of Jamiat, headed by Abdul Zalil Ragbi, had been constituted till a new committee was formed.

He said the new committee would be constituted within a month or so.

Ajmal could not be contacted. But the media secretary of the AIUDF, Haidar Hussain Bora, said the party would not like to comment till Ajmal sahab received a formal communiqué from Arshad Madani informing his expulsion and dissolution of the Assam unit of Jamiat.

Even though Bora did not directly point out any conspiracy behind the development, he gave broad hints about the involvement of the Congress.

He said Ajmal, who is currently holding road shows across the state, particularly in the Muslim-dominated areas, would clear everything before the media and public.

“The Congress has been trying and has been successful on certain occasions in dividing the Jamiat for nasty political gains. There is every possibility that the Congress played a role in provoking or influencing Madani to expel Ajmal and dissolve the Assam unit as it might affect the image of the latter among Muslims,” a party insider said.
