Guwahati, Jan. 27: Assam Governor J.B. Patnaik reaffirmed the government’s resolve to deal sternly with any group resorting to violence while expressing satisfaction at the improved security scene in the state at the Republic Day function here yesterday.

Addressing the function at Latasil playground, Patnaik said, “The security situation in the state has improved considerably in the recent past. I hope that the proposed peace talks with Ulfa and other groups will usher in a new era of peace and prosperity. I appeal to all the groups and communities in the state to maintain the tradition of peaceful co-existence.”

He added, “I am happy to note that the developmental initiatives taken by the government have led to an economic resurgence in the state. From a position of acute financial crisis a few years back, the state government has been able to make a turn-around.”

In Nagaland, Governor Nikhil Kumar said the demand for a separate statehood by the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO), has come at a time when the Naga political issue was delicately poised, reports our correspondent from Kohima.

Addressing the Republic Day function at Secretariat Plaza yesterday, he appealed to the people of the four districts in eastern Nagaland to reconsider their stand and join hands with the government to bring development to the less developed areas of the state.

He urged the people to have patience and give the government some more time to meet their expectations.
