Guwahati, Feb. 18: Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi today took credit for the success of the 12th South Asian Games (SAG) and asked the Centre to sanction Rs 1,000 crore to build new stadia at over 200 blocks in the state.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi today described the SAG as the best-ever organised Games and it was quite an encouraging news for the state government. Majority of the work# and the creation of infrastructure# for the Games were done by my government. Only a few officials from the Centre came to help the state in organising the Games. I believe 80 per cent of the credit goes to my government."

Gogoi, who was speaking to reporters at the state secretariat here this afternoon, regretted that the Centre is yet to release the entire amount of Rs 133 crore sanctioned for organising the SAG.

The chief minister was critical of the alleged poor publicity about the SAG by national media and accused Doordarshan of being biased in its coverage.

"Doordarshan was highlighting more about Modi and his team (including Sarbananda Sonowal) for the success of the Games. Doordarshan cameras were focused only on Modi and Sarbananda and kept showing them to give an impression that it was them who managed the show. My sports minister - Ajit Singh - really worked hard for the success of SAG. But Singh was hardly shown by Doordarshan," Gogoi said.

Gogoi said that though the SAG was jointly hosted by Assam and Meghalaya, majority of the events were held in Assam.

"The successful conduct of the prestigious mega sports event has proved that Assam has the technical expertise and resources at its disposal. Like the 33rd National Games in 2007, the SAG has brought laurels to the state and the country as a whole," he said.

Gogoi said the 2007 National Games staged during the second tenure of the present state government brought about a sea of change in the sports firmament of the State.

"The National Games in Guwahati brought about a major transformation to sports infrastructure in the state. Several state-of-the-art stadia that came up during the National Games have enabled the state to host prestigious events like the just-concluded South Asian Games," he said.

Gogoi asked the Prime Minister for a special package for Rs 1,000 crore for the development of rural sports infrastructure in all the 219 development blocks.

"I request the Prime Minister for a special package for Rs 1,000 crore for the development of sports infrastructure in the development blocks. Our government would provide the remaining funds," he said.
