Guwahati, Dec. 28: Shocked and shaken by what appears to be a “well-planned and well-executed” defamation campaign launched by cyber-savvy mischief-mongers, authorities of the prestigious Cotton College here have decided to move the state government to check “mischief” on the Internet.

The “mischief” refers to a free pornographic website — guwahatinudegirls.20m.com — which has been posting photographs of nude girls alleged to be students of two city colleges, Cotton and S.B. Deorah.

The photographs carried names like Rupa Katoki, Anandita Bora, Moushumi Bezbaruah, Jonaki Bhuyan and Binita Goswami. The website even gave the e-mail account of one of them, rupa_katoki@rediffmail. com.

Rattled by the bombardment of telephone calls and personal inquiries to verify facts, a harried Ramcharan Thakuria, principal of the college, today said at a press conference convened by the Cotton College Students Union that he would take up the matter with the government.

“I will meet the concerned authorities tomorrow to brief them about this website. There is not an iota of truth in the contents. We will request the authorities to take appropriate action against whoever may be behind this mischief. The contents are a part of a well-calculated conspiracy to defame our hallowed institution,” Thakuria said.

The principal further said if such attempts are not dealt with firmly, it will only embolden those behind it. “Reputation once lost is very difficult to restore. This website has already done immense damage to our image and this trend will continue if it is not checked forthwith. We will also request the government and the media to be more vigilant about cybercrime and mischief,” he said.

Agitated CCSU leaders Paranjyoti Dutta and Jagadish Dutta said they would lodge a formal complaint with police to initiate action against the website. “We will not take any attempt aimed at maligning our institution lying down. We have gone through the contents, downloaded the offending materials to match them with official records and photographs. None of them matched. This trend has to stop and we will see to it that action is taken against the guilty,” the duo said, seeking the co-operation of the public in fighting this menace.
