Guwahati, Aug. 27: Food Corporation of India (FCI) SC rode a last minute goal by Aronjit Brahma to edge past Sunrise Athletic Club by a solitary goal in the RG Baruah Trophy Super Division Football League match at Nehru Stadium here today.

Today’s match was an evenly poised encounter, with both the teams doing their best. However, after a sterling performance, the Sunrise men let themselves down after literally handing over the match to FCI on a silver platter.

After committing a foul in the D-box, the Sunrise men watched helplessly as the referee awarded FCI a penalty and Brahma made no mistake in guiding the ball into the net for the winning goal.

Both the sides played an attacking game today, repeatedly trying to penetrate each other’s territories. Sunrise played a shade better than the FCI initially and made some dents on the FCI armour in the first half. However they could not capitalise on them as the FCI defence stood their ground and most of all the FCI goalkeeper did his club proud by displaying some superb goalkeeping.

The FCI, too, initiated some good moves in the opponent’s territory, but their efforts were thwarted by the exceptional goalkeeping of the Sunrise custodian. The FCI frontline also lacked the sting to make the crucial breakthrough.

Earlier in the day, Assam State Electricity Board got a walkover against Maharana Athletic Club who pulled out of the tournament for the second time because of shortage of players. Maharana had tried to play on with a depleted side in the previous matches, but with disastrous results.

Jewel Star Club will play Sports Authority of India SC in tomorrow’s match.

A-division League

In the GSA first division football league match played in the same ground, Gauhati Town Club rode a hattrick by African recruit Harry Clinton Afonya to inflict a 4-0 defeat on Rising XI.

In a totally one-sided affair, Gauhati Town Club showed little mercy in pulverising their hapless opponents. Sengso Momin opened the floodgates for GTC in the fourth minute of the game. The next 36 minutes was just the lull before the storm. In the 40th minute, Afonya ruffled the net again to consolidate the lead and backed it up with another the very next minute. He hammered in the last nail into the Rising XI coffin in the 85th minute to ensure his team’s victory.

Rajbari Athletic Club will play Chandmari SC in tomorrow’s match.
