Shillong, March 6: The alleged "fake website" of Techno Global University has an "important public notice" cautioning people on the prevalence of "fake websites", which are there to "ruin" the university's "reputation".
"We are getting regular enquiries about the authenticity of the university website and hence the management has decided to issue this notice in the public domain for its awareness. This notice clarifies that...Please be aware of the scams run by the several fake organisations to ruin the reputation of Techno global university (sic)," the notice on the portal's main page read.
It also noted that the university would not be responsible of action taken by its students on the basis of information available on "that fake website".
The website, www. technoglobaluniversity.org, even has a collage of photographs of "students" who appear to be from various parts of the globe giving the impression that it is doing justice to the name "global". However, through this website, some people have been allegedly duped by a husband-wife duo.
To attract prospective students, the website had put up names of leading brands like State Bank of India, Wipro, Bosch, Kotak Life Insurance, HCL and a host of others as "our recruiters".
Details available with the UGC reveal that the Techno Global University's website bears the address http:/echnoglobaluniversity.com.
Techno Global University is one of over half-a-dozen private universities that have been permitted to open a campus in Meghalaya after the state government passed the requisite legislation in the Assembly. The Techno Global University Act was passed by the legislature in 2008.
On Tuesday, a Meghalaya police team managed to arrest the husband-wife duo from Patna. Sanjeev Kumar, 36, a resident of Shivpuri under Shastrinagar police station, and his wife Pooja Srivastava, 32, were brought this evening to the state capital on transit remand. The duo will be produced in court tomorrow.
The arrest came after Techno Global University lodged a complaint with Mawlai police that a "fake" marksheet was issued to one individual in the name of Techno Global University, Shillong, and a fake website in the name of the university was found to have been floated.
"Based on the complaint that unknown persons have created a fake website and were offering admissions and also issuing fake marksheets while the genuine university was yet to function, an investigating team was formed. The team had been pursuing the case in Assam, West Bengal and Bihar," East Khasi Hills superintendent of police M. Kharkrang said.
After painstaking efforts, the mastermind, Sanjeev Kumar, was arrested by a team, le#d by inspector D.B. Lamare of Mawlai police station and inspector B. K. Mishra of Laban police station, Kharkrang said. Patna police had assisted the team.
When a search of the flat where the duo were staying was conducted, Kharkrang said the police found a room "full of certificates" and other documents of universities like those of Techno Global University and the disbanded Chandra Mohan Jha (CMJ) University.
The items that were seized included two laptops, seals, hologram and letterheads of the Techno Global, provincial certificates, blank marksheets of CMJ University and cash amounting to Rs 17 lakh. Kharkrang said more arrests are likely.
