Jorhat, June 16: Jorhat Stadium, with its heritage earthen galleries, is all set to wear a new look.

The construction committee has started work on the concrete galleries and boundary walls with Rs 2.69 crore released from the non-lapsable central pool of resources.

“The foundation stone has been laid by Jorhat MP B.K. Handique. The construction has already started and is expected to be completed on schedule (in a year),” said the district sports officer of Jorhat, Bombeswar Borah, while disclosing the details of the proposed construction of the boundary wall.

The walls will be constructed on the northern and eastern sides and the galleries on the eastern and southern sides. “The earthen gallery to the north of the stadium will be preserved. It is one of the oldest such galleries in Asia,” Borah said.

Assistant director of sports Jatin Borchetia, who is being deputed a nodal officer by the sports department to look after the project, told The Telegraph in Guwahati, that it would be completed on schedule if the funds flow was not delayed because of red tape.
