Aizawl: Save Chite Lui Co-ordination Committee, a panel created for revival of the dying Chite river, held a meeting at the Secretariat conference hall here on Wednesday.

The meeting reviewed the current projects and discussed initiatives for restoration of the Chite, in the north western part of Aizawl.

Under the chairmanship of chief secretary Lalmalsawma, the meeting decided that a special committee on anti-littering under the Aizawl Municipal Corporation and Central Young Mizo Association would take steps in creating Save Chite Lui Task Force.

The Aizawl deputy commissioner's office will also be responsible in constructing a check dam on the Chite and in putting up hoardings to raise awareness against dumping of garbage in the river.

Aizawl deputy commissioner Kannan Gopinathan had started the Save Chite Lui project in March.

Since then, under the initiatives of the Save Chite Lui Co-ordination Committee, various organisations here like the Mizoram State National Service Scheme volunteers are keeping the river clean.

In October, experts from University of Minnesota and Mississippi Watershed Management Organisation tested the river and discussed with the committee the steps to be taken to restore the river.

The next mass cleaning of the Chite will be done on November 24. The National Service Scheme volunteers from all higher secondary schools in Aizawl will participate in the drive.
