Guwahati: Several leaders of political organisations of Dima Hasao district demanded action against chief executive member (CEM) of NC Hills Autonomous Council Debolal Gorlosa for his alleged role in the killing of former CEM Purnendu Langthasa and executive member Nindu Langthasa and called for a stop to the "goonda raj" prevalent in the district.
The leaders, at a news meet here on Friday, alleged that there has been no development, there is a lack of drinking water and benefits to the poor, with employees going without salary for 13 months at a stretch in the district.
Asom Tribal Parishad general secretary Zed Nunisa said, "Action Dimasa had given a statement in a Haflong court that Gorlosa was involved in the killing of Purnendu and Nindu Langthasa. We had organised a rally on August 11, with the support of the public, demanding justice and many had spoken out against Gorlosa and his misrule. There was a call for Gorlosa to resign on moral grounds. The next day, around 50 to 60 people gheraoed us and threatened to kill us. A few days later, following a party meeting at Hajadisa constituency, a group of men in camouflage, toting guns, came to attack Tribal Parishad president Feroz Langthasa. There is a complete breakdown of law and order. This happens whenever elections are due in the district. The AGP is being targeted as it has made a comeback in the district."
Five years have gone by since elections to the council were held.
Action Dimasa is an erstwhile member of the militant organisation, Dima Halam Daogah (Joel faction) or DHD (J) in which Debolal Gorlosa alias Daniel Dimasa was a leader. Action, who turned state witness in a case against Gorlosa, said under oath that Gorlosa had himself shot Nindu Langthasa and ordered the killing of Purnendu Langthasa, the son of Congress leader G.C. Langthasa.
Former council CEM and AGP leader Debojeet Thaosen said "goonda raj" is being unleashed in the district with unknown people moving around with guns and threatening leaders of political organisations. Gorlosa was labelled the "worst CEM" and the most criminally tainted political leader who has failed to govern the council.
Feroz Langthasa spoke about the death of democracy and healthy politics in the district.
The leaders urged Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to stop criminalisation of politics in Dima Hasao district.
