Digboi club stitches squad - 4500 golfers in fray for top honours

Dibrugarh, Nov. 5: Surajit Goswami and Utpal Deka yesterday booked their places in the Digboi Golf Club team for the East Zone regional final of the McDowell’s Signature Club Golf Championship.

In the intra-club tournament, the first stage of the multi-city event held at Digboi Golf Club here yesterday, Goswami, who tallied 30 stable ford points, emerged as the winner in the 0-8 category. Deka came second with 28 stable ford points.

The duo were joined by Mridul Shyam and R.C. Boro, the winner and runner-up respectively of the 9-16 handicap category. Shyam scored 31 points while Boro aggregated 29 points. Also filling in the last two spots of the Digboi team were D.P. Prasad and O.P. Chetry. Both Prasad and Chetry scored 29 points each in the 17-24 category but Prasad was declared the winner on the basis of a better back nine score category.

Chetry won the prize for the straightest drive held on the 5th hole while L.D. Das won the longest drive prize held on the 11th hole.

The McDowell’s Signature Club Golf Championship this year will bring together over 4,500 golfers representing 30 top golf clubs from 22 cities across the country. The final will be held at Burapha Golf Course and Resort, Pattaya.

The eastern region comprises seven teams — Tollygunge Club, Royal Calcutta Golf Club, Fort William Golf Club, Digboi Golf Club, Beldih and Golmuri Clubs, Bhubaneswar Golf Club and the Gokarna Forest Golf Resort and Spa (Nepal).

The eastern regional final will be held on November 12 at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club.
