Guwahati, April 19: Devangana Barkakati and Anurag Buragohain won the girls’ and boys’ under-14 singles titles respectively in the 6th Kaliyani Open All-Assam Junior Ranking Tennis Championship at Kaliyani Club courts at Numaligarh in Golaghat district today.
While top seed Devangana beat Baishali B. Bora in the straight sets of 6-4, 6-0, Anurag defeated Rishav Brahma 6-3, 6-2 in the finals.
In the semi-finals, Devangana beat Harshita Borah 4-1, 4-1 and Baishali B. Bora got the better of Ishika Chakma 4-1, 4-0. In the boys’ event, Anurag prevailed over Anshuman Phukan 4-2, 4-1 and Rishav overcame Jishnu Baruah 4-2, 2-4, 4-1.
Debangana and Anurag booked berths in the under-18 singles’ events finals to be played tomorrow.
In the semi-finals today, top seed Devangana blanked Ishika Chakma 4-0, 4-0 and second seed Nazia Ahmed prevailed over third seed Harshita Bora 4-0, 4-1.
In boys’ under-18 semi-finals, Anurag beat third seed local lad Shivam Goswami 4-1, 4-1 and fourth seed Manash P. Kuli defeated another local boy Satyam Goswami 5-4, 4-1.
Kritanta Sarma of Guwahati beat Devanga P. Hazarika 6-1, 6-2 in the final for the under-12 boys’ title.
In the semi-finals, Kritanta tamed Siddhant P. Dutta 4-0, 4-0 and Devanga humbled Abhishek Baruah 4-0, 4-2.
Tutu Thapa and Sudhanta Mohanty will meet Manash P. Kuli and Bedabrat Mohan in the men’s open doubles final tomorrow. In the semi-finals today, Tutu and Sudhanta beat Rupam Gogoi and Kunal Sutradhar 8-4, and Manash and Bedabrat got the better of Sneyal Nayan-Satyam Bora 8-6.
Zonal camp: Altogether five Assam players have been invited to a National Cricket Academy Zonal Cricket Academy camp for under-19 girls (East Zone) to be held at Barsapara Cricket Stadium here from Monday to May 16.
Altogether 25 girls will participate in this camp.
The Assam players are Kalpana Choutal, Ruhina Pegu, Nirupama Baro, Rashmi Dey and Kakoli Saikia.
