Agartala: Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb will fly to New Delhi on Tuesday morning flight to attend an event as part of the yearlong 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The event will be chaired by President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend.
A senior officer from the chief minister's office (CMO) said Deb will join the event on Wednesday with chief ministers from all other states of the country.
He was also chosen as a member of the committee for observing the birth anniversary of the Mahatma.
Recent reports claimed that Deb had been summoned to New Delhi by Modi for his controversial comments of late. However, additional secretary to the chief minister, Milind Ramteke, had clarified there was no such issue and the chief minister's visit to the capital was part of a "pre-scheduled" function and that he will attend two events during his three-day trip.
A letter from the Prime Minister's Office had informed the CMO in April that the first meeting of the full committee was scheduled on May 2 from 5pm in New Delhi. It appealed to all chief ministers to share thoughts on spreading "the Mahatma's message".
"The committee is mandated to consider policies and lay down guidelines for commemoration and decide a timeframe for related activities," the letter reads.
Deb is also slated to attend a meeting chaired by external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj on May 4.
The meeting, which will have all eight chief ministers of the Northeast in attendance, will involve discussions on border conflict, international trade and border-related crimes.
