Council polls in Mizoram

The village and local council elections will be held in Mizoram on April 30, the Mizoram state election commission announced in Aizawl today.

Silchar, April 4: The village and local council elections will be held in Mizoram on April 30, the Mizoram state election commission announced in Aizawl today.

The elections are being held after three years.

State election commissioner L. Tochhawng said election to the village councils would be held in six of the eight districts - Aizawl, Lunglei, Sherchip, Champhai, Mamit and Kolosib - and in 83 local councils in Aizawl the same day.

Elections in Lawngtlai and Saiha districts are administrated by the autonomous district councils under the framework of the Sixth Schedule.

The six districts will have 597 polling booths and altogether 3,96,601 voters.

In Aizawl municipality's 83 local councils, the total electorate will be 92,382.

Sources in the state election commission said the results would be announced the next day.

Tocchawng said from now on, the tenure of the village councils and the local councils would be five years instead of three years.

She said the model code of conduct for the polls has been enforced.
