Aizawl, July 20: Lai District Congress Committee president F. Rohnuna has accused the Mizoram government of illegally dissolving the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC).
Speaking to newspersons yesterday at the Congress Bhavan here, Rohnuna said that according to paragraph 14 of the Sixth Schedule, an inquiry commission had to be set up before any dissolution could take place.
He said any action based on the version of the Lawngtlai deputy commissioner, who had been empowered by the governor to make a report on the LADC, could not have any value.
His reason was that the commissioner had not been appointed by an inquiry commission, as no such commission had been set up at all.
?This is a total disregard of the law and violation of norms,? he said.
Rohnuna said the Mizo National Front (MNF) underground, during its talks with the Centre, had tried to get the Lai council abolished.
This was, however, turned down by the Centre.
The MNF government had dissolved the council twice while the executive council had been suspended thrice, he added.
Rohnuna also accused the government of arbitrarily dissolving the council on the pretext that the MNF could not accept the council?s legislature party.
Minister flays activist: A government press release has reported that the state food and civil supplies minister K. Sangthuama has criticised human rights activists for coming to the rescue of drug and alcohol peddlers and avoiding the issue of the harm they cause to society.
Speaking at the annual sports closing function of the Republic Higher Secondary School at the Central Hall here recently, the release said the minister exhorted the public to support the YMA in its war against drugs and alcohol and refrain from writing in papers in support of drug and alcohol peddlers.
?Those calling themselves human rights activists should not be on the side of these drug and alcohol sellers and ignore the damage these people inflict on the Mizo youth. There are times that forceful action is needed when trying to eradicate bad things,? the minister said.
