April 30: As the yearlong golden jubilee celebrations of the chemistry department of Gauhati University comes to an end, the department is expected to give shape to its vision document during the two-day concluding function.
According to university sources, the document will be prepared based on a talk on “Vision 2020 for Chemistry Department, GU,” by Anil C. Ghose, one of the alumnus of the department, who is currently an executive vice-chairman and chief executive officer of Chemgen Pharma International.
The chemistry department is one of the oldest departments of Gauhati University.
Various seminars and lectures have been organised to mark the golden jubilee celebration, which started last year.
The concluding function is scheduled to be held on May 5 and 6 at the university. Workshops and seminars on various topics will be organised during the two-day event.
However, the highlight of the function will be an alumni meet and cultural programme.
Past teachers of the departments will also be felicitated during the occasion.
Apart from the other programmes, an awareness programme for chemistry teachers of colleges affiliated to the university will be organised on the concluding day.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, had recently released Rs 7 lakh from his local area development fund for renovation of different laboratories of the department.
Another alumnus of the department and president of the pharmaceutical giant, Zydus Cadila, B.B. Lohary, had also donated Rs 5 lakh for the renovation of the laboratories.
