Golaghat, June 15: A couple in Golaghat district today filed an FIR against two colleges for “abetting” the suicide of their daughter by denying her admission to the English Honours course.

Gautam and Deepa Tamuly’s daughter Rashmi Rekha died on June 12 after she hung herself from the ceiling fan of her room in their Bengenakhowa home.

Golaghat police have registered a case (No. 441/13) under Section 306 of the IPC. The parents also reported the matter to Assam State Human Rights Commission.

The Golaghat unit of All Assam Students’ Union has accused Furkating College of malpractice and has questioned the authorities why Rashmi was denied admission when there were 20 seats for English major and only eight students had applied.

The union also submitted a memorandum to the Golaghat deputy commissioner demanding clarification regarding the anomalies during admission in both Debraj Roy College and Furkating College and also a magisterial inquiry into the matter.

Rashmi had passed the higher secondary examination from Debraj Roy College and had applied for English major there but the department denied her admission, as she was one mark short of the cut-off marks of 55.

She went to apply for a major in education in the same college but, her parents alleged, the teachers in the department rejected her application on the grounds that her medium was English and they could not deliver lectures in that language.

Gautam Tamuly told The Telegraph that his daughter had also appeared for English major entrance test at Furkating College on June 8. He alleged that the college, which had 20 seats, asked her to take admission immediately though the test result would be declared later. She did accordingly and the admission process was completed. But later, when her mother went to the college to get the entrance test result, the authorities informed her that Rashmi had been rejected.

Deepa informed her daughter about the rejection and on reaching home she found Rashmi’s body hanging from the fan.

Debraj Roy College principal Putul Saikia and his Furkating College counterpart Chandan Hazarika said the respective departments reserved the right to decide cut-off marks as well as eligibility criteria for students to be admitted into major classes. As far as the police case was concerned, they said they would fully co-operate in the process.
