All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Wednesday said the protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill has become a peoples’ movement.

“The fight against the bill is no more confined to certain organisations of the state. It has become a peoples’ movement. Every Assamese has realised the danger of the bill. Now it has become a straight fight between the people of Assam and the fascist BJP government,” he told The Telegraph.

Criticising the alleged indifferent attitude of the BJP, Lurinjyoti said, “The BJP has turned completely fascist. They are quite dominating and resorting to atrocity and curtailing the democratic rights of the people of Assam. They must know that we, the people of Assam, are ready to face any consequences to scrap the communal bill.”

Lurinjyoti said the protest against the bill was not driven by emotion as the BJP alleged. “We are opposing the CAB in full conscience. It is opposed by the doctors, academics, engineers, social scientists, retired bureaucrats, technocrats and other intellectuals from all walks of life. The BJP cannot accuse us of being emotional all the time,” he said.

Lurinjyoti condemned the administration for using force against the protesters. He said so far the movement has been led by students.

“The BJP government has been provoking every Assamese to rise against the bill. However, our brothers and sisters from every village of the state are yet to reach Dispur.”
